The Jotter - issue 28
“I always listen to what I can leave out.”
Miles Davis
Hello,
Earlier this week I had a meeting which finished early. It gave me the ideal opportunity to visit the life enhancing ‘Love Life’ exhibition of David Hockney drawings at the Holburne Museum in Bath.
Hockney’s drawings are simple but convey so much. What he chooses to omit is as important as the fine lines he leaves in.
There’s a lesson there…
But in the spirit of less is more, I’ll leave it at that.

01, Photography
The last Jotter began with Craig Mod on the curse of Venice. This month we begin with unconventional photos of the city.
Using different vantage points, an old camera (his father’s), misty focusing and silver gelatin printing; Giacomo Brunelli creates unique and atmospheric photos of well worn views.
02, Business
A celebration of we small businesses.
Inspired by Apples ‘Here’s to the Crazy Ones’ campaign which was in turn inspired by a passage from Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road.’
03, Technology
A post which asks can Morse code remind us how to use new technology? Yes it can…
“… one person sends a message, another person receives it. And each time that happens, a miracle is possible.”
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”
Alvin Toffler
04, The end of ‘social’ media
A fascinating read on how the recent changes to Instagram reflect wider trends in social media.
“…we’ll make fewer explicit choices (“these are my friends”) and more implicit choices (“this is where the algorithm recommends I should spend my attention”)”
05, Good things come to those who wait
Thanks to Feasts & Fables for tweeting about this fine ad from the 90’s. It prompted me to write about why they don’t make ads like this anymore (an over-reliance on data and an under-reliance on instinct).
"So often ideas get diluted down because people are worried about what the public will think."

07, Work.
This month I launched a revitalised website for Clare Hughes. This was very exciting because her clients include the Hayward Gallery, the Southbank Centre and the Georgia O’Keefe Museum.
Being a history graduate, I was delighted to design a new website for Wiltshire Records which was also launched this month… “like any craftsmen, the historian needs raw materials.”
Thank you for reading the August Jotter. The next one will flourish into life on Friday 28th October at 11am as we are on holiday in the south of France in September. If you are a thief or a vagabond this information is completely useless because we have someone living in our home while we are away.
Until then, I hope you have fun.
